How Monio uses AI

Monio uses an AI model for a few jobs that simple rules can't do well. Monio AI is on by default. This page explains what it sees, when it runs, and how to turn it off.

What Monio's AI sees

Monio sends only what one job needs, not your whole account.

  • When you ask Monet a question: your question and your recent chat with Monet. It also gets up to 100 of your transactions from the last 90 days: for each one, the date, amount, currency, merchant name, category and the bank description. It also gets totals: your monthly spending and income, top categories and merchants, regular bills, this month's budgets, and how much you hold and owe in total.
  • When Monio drafts or suggests a budget: your spending per category, your fixed costs, your income estimate, and the same recent transactions and totals.
  • When you ask for a category suggestion: that one transaction (merchant, bank description, date, amount) and the names of your categories.
  • When you estimate the cost of a plan: only the words you type and your currency.
  • When you import from another budgeting app: the names of categories Monio doesn't recognize, the groups they were in, how many transactions each had, and up to five merchant names each. Your imported transactions are not sent. Merchant names come from the file as you uploaded it, except for an imported account that Monio matched to one of your accounts hidden from totals: none of its merchant names are sent.
  • When Monio checks a possible match (a refund, a card credit, or a friend paying you back): the two sides of the match. That means dates, amounts, merchants, bank descriptions, the purchase's category, and the name of the card and bank it was on. For a friend paying you back, it sees only their first name and their payment note.
  • When Monio checks a Splitwise bill against your charges: the bill's description, Splitwise category, date, total, your share and what you're owed back, and up to four of your charges that might match it.
  • When Monio sorts payment-app and Splitwise items: the payment note or bill description, and up to 8 other notes with the same person. For Splitwise it also sees the group name and up to 8 other bills from that group.

Numbers are removed first

Before any bank description, payment note, Splitwise bill, merchant name or category name goes to the AI, Monio removes the numbers in it that could be a card, account, reference, phone or confirmation number, and any email address. A short number that is part of a shop's name, like the 54 in "Studio 54", can stay. Amounts and dates are sent as their own separate details.

Two things are still worth knowing:

  • A bank description can still include a name, such as the person you sent a Zelle payment to.
  • Notes and bills can be written by other people, such as a friend's Venmo note or a Splitwise bill a friend added. These, and Zelle descriptions, can include people's names.

What Monio never sends

  • Your bank sign-in details or bank connection keys
  • Monio's internal account IDs
  • Notes you write in Monio
  • Your emails or calendar events
  • The accounts and transactions of other people in your household
  • Accounts marked "Hidden from totals" (the eye button on the Accounts page). Their transactions, merchants, account names and balances are never sent. They still count in the totals the AI gets, as they do on your dashboard: monthly spending and income, spending per category, budgets, and loan minimum payments in budget suggestions.
  • Pictures or files. Monio sends text only.

Monio doesn't add your name, your email address or your Monio user ID to AI requests, and it removes numbers and email addresses from bank and payment text. Account and card names are sent as they appear in Monio, so a name you gave an account is included. What you type into a Monet question or a plan is sent as you wrote it, so leave out anything you don't want the AI to see.

When it runs

  • When you ask: a question to Monet, a category suggestion, a budget suggestion, a plan estimate, or an import.
  • On its own, once: after you connect your first bank, Monio drafts a first budget.
  • In the background: when Monio finds a possible match or an unclear payment-app or Splitwise item that its rules can't settle, it asks the AI in small batches. Each batch holds one person's data.

The AI suggests; Monio's own rules decide. Your balances, spending and other totals are always worked out by Monio, never by the AI. Monio checks every answer against what it sent, links things on its own only when it is confident, and asks you about the rest. You can change any result.

Turning it off

Monio AI is on by default. Monio tells you about it before it first runs, in a notice or during setup. You can turn it off there, and closing the notice keeps it on. You can also turn it off any time in Settings, under Privacy and AI.

When it's off:

  • No new AI requests are made for you. Background checks stop within a minute or so.
  • Monio's rules still run, and a few more items come to you to review.
  • Turning AI off doesn't delete earlier results, such as the short reason saved with a match. They stay in your account, and deleting your account removes them.

Who processes it

Monio uses Anthropic's Claude models through Anthropic's paid API.

Monio doesn't keep a copy of what it sends to the AI. It keeps:

  • a short record that a request happened (its size, timing and whether it worked)
  • the AI's answer where it's needed, such as a match decision with a short reason

Monio doesn't save your Monet chat. It lives only in your open browser tab and is gone when you reload or close Monio.

Household

Each person's AI uses only their own accounts. Your partner's transactions never go into your AI requests, and yours never go into theirs.

Sharing settings, such as "Private", "Totals only" and "Hide from household", control what your household sees. They don't stop your own AI from using your own transactions. To keep your data out of AI, you can turn Monio AI off, or hide an account from totals on the Accounts page so its transactions aren't sent.
