The short answer
Monio or YNAB?
YNAB is a method as much as an app: you give every dollar a job before you spend it, and you keep the plan up to date as money comes and goes. Monio asks for less upkeep. It sorts your spending for you and drafts a budget from your real history. Paybacks from friends and Splitwise bills are matched to the purchases they belong to.

YNAB alternative with less upkeep
YNAB (You Need A Budget) teaches the YNAB Method, written as five principles: For Now (decide what your money needs to do before you get paid again), For Later (set a little aside for costs that don't come every month), For Ease (get a month ahead on bills), For You (put money toward what you want from life) and For change (adjust the plan when a month doesn't go as expected). You assign only money you already have, and Targets help you plan what each category needs.
Monio starts from the other end. It connects to your accounts, works out what each transaction means, and shows what you really spent. A budget is drafted for you from your last few months, and you change only the amounts you care about. You can check in once a week instead of assigning money every time a paycheck lands.
Zero-based budgeting vs. a budget drafted for you
In YNAB, nothing is budgeted until you assign it. When $3,000 arrives, it sits in Ready to Assign until you split it across rent, groceries, savings and the rest.
Monio's draft budget sets a target for each category from your recent spending, with fixed costs as the floor. If rent is $2,100, the housing budget is never set below $2,100. Spending in a category without a budget still counts toward your total, so nothing quietly drops out. Monio also shows month-to-date and month-end views of your spending. YNAB's features page doesn't describe a month-end spending projection; it plans with money you already have, and scheduled transactions show amounts coming up.
Card payments, refunds and statement credits
YNAB treats a card payment as a transfer into an automatically created Credit Card Payment category, so it isn't counted as an expense. Its help center notes that the first imported payment between two accounts may need to be set by hand, and YNAB remembers it after that. Monio pairs the bank side and the card side of a payment and leaves both out of spending.
For refunds, YNAB's help says to put a card refund back in the original spending category rather than Ready to Assign. Statement credits are entered as an inflow on the card, then you adjust the card payment category by hand. Monio matches a refund to its purchase and takes it off in that purchase's category and month. It also knows the statement credits on your cards, shows what's used and what's left this period, and takes each credit off the purchase it covers.
Reimbursements, paybacks and Splitwise
YNAB's help center describes three ways to handle a reimbursement: assign money up front, let a card go overspent until you're paid back, or keep a pre-funded category. It also has a guide for using Splitwise alongside YNAB, which is manual guidance; its help pages don't describe a direct Splitwise connection. Splitting a transaction across categories is covered in its help, though the help notes that splits aren't available on Android.
Monio connects to Splitwise and links each bill to the card charge it belongs to. Say you pay a $300 cabin deposit and Splitwise shows your share as $100. Monio counts $100 as your spending. When your two friends pay you back, their money is matched to the deposit instead of counting as income, and your spending stays at $100.
YNAB price vs. Monio price
YNAB is $14.99 a month or $109 a year, listed on YNAB's site in October 2026. The free trial is 34 days with no card needed when you sign up directly, and students get 365 days. There's no permanent free tier.
Monio is $7.99 a month or $80 a year, with a 7-day free trial and no credit card needed. Over a year, that's $80 against $109.
Budgeting with a partner
YNAB Together shares one subscription with up to six people at no extra cost, which is generous for a family that plans together.
Monio's household works differently. Each person keeps their own login and accounts and chooses which accounts to share. Accounts you don't share stay private, and money moved between you isn't counted as spending and income in the household view. Each member costs $5 a month on top of the owner's plan.
Platforms, regions and investments
YNAB runs on the web, iPhone, iPad, Android and Apple Watch. Bank sync is offered in the US, Canada, the UK and 18 listed European countries (not for every bank), and you can import files elsewhere. Investments are tracked by updating the balance by hand, and they feed a net worth report.
Monio runs in any web browser on a computer or phone. It connects banks, cards and brokerages through Plaid and adds their balances into one net worth figure.
