Tiller vs. Monio: a spreadsheet or an app

Tiller syncs your bank accounts, spending, income, debt and balances into spreadsheets you own, in Google Sheets or Microsoft Excel. It updates daily. Its Foundation Template gives you a budget, spending insights, cash flow and net worth, and you can change any of it or add templates from its community.

Monio is an app, not a spreadsheet. It works out what each transaction means before adding anything up, and shows the result in pages built for that: spending by day and category, budgets, and a month-end view. You can fix a category, but you can't rewrite how a total is calculated. That's the trade: Tiller gives you control, Monio does more of the work.

Tiller is for US customers and connects through Yodlee and Plaid to more than 10,000 institutions, including loans and investment accounts. Monio connects through Plaid, asks for up to 24 months of history depending on the bank, and runs in any web browser, on a desktop, laptop or phone.

Card payments and transfers in Tiller

Tiller's help pages say you mark both sides of a transfer with a Transfer-type category, and that paying a card in full is best treated as a transfer. It isn't automatic. Say you pay off a $1,500 card bill from checking: you give both the checking row and the card row a Transfer-type category.

Monio pairs both sides of a card payment or a transfer between your own accounts and leaves them out of spending without any setup. If it gets one wrong, you fix it once.

Refunds, paybacks and Splitwise

For refunds, Tiller suggests a Refund category of the transfer type for the purchase and the credit, and its AutoCat rules can match words like refund or return. For paybacks, it suggests a transfer-type reimbursement category, and a splitter divides one amount across categories. Tiller's help pages don't describe a Splitwise integration.

Monio matches a refund to the purchase it was for and takes it off that purchase, in its category and month. Paybacks work the same way. Say you paid a $200 dinner and your share was $50: as friends pay you back, Monio lowers the dinner, so it counts as $50 of dining, and the $150 isn't income. If you use Splitwise, Monio connects to it and links each bill to the card charge, so only your share counts.

Budgeting and forecasting

Tiller's budget is a sheet: you set the categories and the amounts, and you can build any view you like. Its Cash Flow Forecast template works from your budget amounts rather than from your transactions.

Monio sets up a first budget from up to three months of your own spending, never below fixed costs like rent, and you change any amount. It shows month-to-date and month-end views, opened by category. Monio also finds recurring charges and lists your subscriptions with what each costs a month.

For sorting, Tiller's AutoCat applies your rules first, then matches on the description, then offers an AI Suggest step. In Monio, when you change a category you choose whether it applies to that transaction, to the merchant going forward, or to every match, and Monio keeps your choice on future syncs.

Tiller price compared with Monio

Tiller has one plan at $99 a year, as listed on Tiller's site in October 2026. The trial is 30 days free, and the next 30 days are covered by a full refund. There is no free tier.

Monio Pro is $7.99 a month or $80 a year after a 7-day free trial. A household seat for a partner is $5 a month.

Sharing with a partner

With Tiller, you share the spreadsheet the way you share any Google Sheet or Excel file. Its help pages don't describe a separate partner feature. That's simple, but whoever can open the sheet sees every row in it.

In Monio, each person keeps their own login and chooses which accounts to share with the household. Accounts you don't share stay private, and money moved between the two of you isn't counted as spending and income.

Moving from Tiller to Monio

Your Tiller data already lives in your sheet. Open the Transactions tab and download it as a CSV, then upload it to Monio's importer. Monio brings over your categories, how each store was sorted, and your past transactions. Transactions your bank can't supply come over as history on their own account. You connect your banks again through Plaid, review everything before it's applied, and can undo the import for 30 days. One import holds up to 8,000 transactions.

Why Monio

What Monio does well.

  • No sheet to maintain

Monio sorts each transaction for you and keeps your corrections on future syncs. No formulas to fix.

  • Paybacks and refunds where they belong

Money friends pay back and refunds come off the purchase they were for, and Splitwise bills count only your share.

  • Private by account

Share chosen accounts with a partner. Accounts you don't share stay private to you.

Switching

Moving from Tiller to Monio.

Bank connections can't move between apps, but your categories, how you sort each store and your past transactions can. Export a file from Tiller, then upload it in Monio under Switch to Monio.

  1. Open your Tiller sheet and select the Transactions tab.

  2. Choose File, then Download, then Comma-separated values (.csv).

The file is named after your sheet and the Transactions tab. In Monio, choose Switch to Monio and upload it. You check everything before it's applied, and you can undo the import for 30 days.
