Monio for couples

Monio is a budgeting app for couples where each partner keeps their own login and chooses, account by account, what the other sees: Everything, Totals only or Private. Couples manage money in many ways, from one joint account to fully separate finances, and Monio is built for the middle: shared spending rolls into one household view, and the rest stays yours.

Couples who keep separate accounts

Many couples keep their own checking accounts and cards and share only some costs. In Monio, each of you connects your own accounts with your own login, then picks one of three sharing levels for each account.

Everything: your partner sees the balance and each purchase. Totals only: the account counts in household spending and income, and your partner sees its balance but not the purchases. Private: the account stays out of the household and your partner doesn't see it.

Joining a household or connecting a new account never shares anything on its own. Monio asks you first, and you can change any level later on the household privacy page.

What your partner never sees

Partners never see your notes, receipts or raw bank descriptions, even on accounts you share as Everything. Your card limits, available balances and your banks' full account names stay hidden too, unless you switch them on.

If one purchase should stay private, such as a gift, open it and choose Hide from household. It still counts in household totals so the numbers add up, but your partner doesn't see what it was or where you bought it. Monio is upfront about the limit: because hidden purchases and Totals only accounts still count, a partner could work out roughly when and how much was spent, but not where.

Shared bills and paybacks between you

When one of you sends money to the other, say to cover half the rent, the household view counts it as a transfer. It isn't spending for one of you and income for the other, so rent is counted once.

Bills you split with friends work the same way for each of you. Connect Splitwise and Monio links each shared bill to the card charge it came from, so only your share counts as spending. When a friend pays you back on Venmo or Zelle, that money settles what they owed and isn't counted as income.

One household budget

The household has its own spending view and budget, built only from the accounts each person shares. Each of you still has your own budget for your own accounts, so you can keep personal spending personal.

Why Monio

What Monio does well.

  • One household, two people

Invite a partner and see combined spending without giving up your own accounts or sign-in.

  • Paybacks handled

Splitwise bills and the money that settles them are matched to the original charge, so shared costs are not double-counted.

  • Simple household pricing

Monio Pro is $7.99 a month. Adding a partner is $5 a month, not a second Monio Pro plan.

Questions

Common questions.

Can we keep separate accounts?

Yes. Each of you connects your own accounts and keeps your own login. For each account you choose Everything, Totals only or Private, and you can change it later. Nothing is shared until you choose.

Can my partner see my transactions?

Only on accounts you share as Everything, and even then not your notes, receipts or raw bank descriptions. On a Totals only account your partner sees the balance, not the purchases. Private accounts aren't shown at all. You can also hide a single purchase from the household.

Does money we send each other count as spending?

No. In the household view, money moved between you is a transfer. It isn't counted as spending or income, so shared costs like rent are counted once.

How much does Monio cost for a couple?

The household owner pays for Monio Pro, $7.99 a month or $80 a year. Each person added is $5 a month, up to nine. There is a 7-day free trial with no credit card.

Can we have a shared budget?

Yes. A household has its own budget, built from the accounts each person shares. Your own budget for your own accounts stays as it is.
