The short answer
Monio or Origin?
Pick Origin if you want budgeting, investment advice, estate planning and long-range forecasts in one subscription. Pick Monio if what you mostly want is an accurate monthly spending number: card payments and transfers left out, refunds and paybacks taken off the purchase, Splitwise bills counted at your share, and a view of where the month is heading.
- Pick Monio if
- your spending is tangled up with friends and a partner and you want each purchase counted once, at your share, without fixing it by hand.
- Pick Origin if
- you want long-range planning, investment advice and estate planning next to your budget, all under one price.
Side by side, point by point.

Origin vs. Monio: what each app is for
Origin describes itself as an all-in-one finance app for individuals and couples. Its homepage lists spending and budgets, investing (with advice through a registered adviser affiliate), forecasting, estate planning and an AI advisor you can ask questions.
Monio covers a narrower piece of that: what you actually spent this month and where the month is likely to end. It does not offer human financial advice or investment advice. If you are comparing the two, the real question is whether you want one app that tries to cover your whole financial plan, or a tracker that spends its effort on getting the spending number right.
How Origin and Monio count spending
Both apps keep card payments out of spending. Origin's help pages say confident transfer matches are left out of income and spending, and card payments generally become transfers. Monio pairs both sides of a card payment or a transfer between your own accounts and leaves the pair out.
Refunds work differently. Origin's help pages say to give a refund the original expense's category so it offsets the purchase, and you can re-date it to the original month or hide it. In Monio, a refund is matched to the purchase it was for and taken off that purchase, in its category and its month, without re-dating anything yourself.
Say you bought a $120 jacket in May and returned it in June. If the refund lands in June under a different category, June looks $120 better than it was and May looks $120 worse. Both apps aim for the right answer here; the difference is whether you do the matching or the app does.
Shared bills, paybacks and Splitwise
Origin lets you split a transaction equally or by custom amounts, and rules can split matching transactions automatically. Its help pages don't mention Splitwise.
Monio is built around shared costs. Say you paid a $200 dinner and your share was $50. When three friends pay you back, Monio finds the dinner each payback was for and lowers it, so the dinner counts as $50 of spending, not $200 of spending plus $150 of income. If you use Splitwise, Monio connects to it and links each bill to the card charge, so only your share counts.
Budgets and planning
Origin has category budgets and an AI Budget Builder that looks at your last six months of spending. Its forecasting tool works on a longer scale: life events, net worth and cash flow projections, and a success rate for long-range plans. Its own docs don't describe a month-end spending projection.
Monio sets up a first budget from up to three months of your spending and never sets a category below fixed costs like rent. It shows month-to-date and month-end views, opened by category. Planning a trip or a big expense against your spending is coming soon in Monio; today, Origin is the one with long-range planning built in.
Origin price compared with Monio
Origin is $12.99 a month or $99 a year, each with a 7-day free trial, as listed on Origin's site in October 2026. There is no free tier, and one subscription covers both partners.
Monio Pro is $7.99 a month or $80 a year after a 7-day free trial. Adding a partner is a $5 a month household seat, so a couple pays $12.99 a month on the monthly plan, the same as Origin's monthly price. Over a year, Monio is $80 plus $60 for the seat.
Using it as a couple
Origin includes a partner in the one subscription, and each person keeps their own accounts. Monio's household works in a similar way: each person keeps their own login and picks which accounts to share; the rest stay private. Money moved between the two of you is treated as a transfer, so it isn't counted as one person's spending and the other's income.
Where each one runs
Origin lists iOS, Android and Mac desktop apps on its homepage. Its FAQ says the mobile apps are US-only for now, while the web version works anywhere. Monio runs in any web browser, on a desktop, laptop or phone, and has no app store apps.
For bank connections, Origin says it uses Plaid, MX and Finicity and picks the best one, and it has help articles for bringing in history from Mint, Monarch and Empower. Monio connects through Plaid, asks for up to 24 months of history depending on the bank, and can import exports from Monarch, Copilot, Rocket Money, YNAB, Simplifi, Empower, Tiller and Mint.

Why Monio
What Monio does well.
Focused on your numbers
Monio does one job: show what you really spend and where the month is heading.
Numbers you can check
Open a spending total to see the transactions behind it, and fix a category once.
AI you can turn off
Monio AI is on by default and answers questions about your spending. Monio tells you once before it is used, and you can turn it off any time in Settings. It never sees account numbers or bank logins.
Questions
Common questions.
Is Origin worth it?
Whether Origin is worth it depends on what you want from it. If you'll use its investing, forecasting and estate planning, one subscription covers both partners. If you mainly want accurate spending totals, a focused tracker like Monio costs less for one person.
How much does Origin cost?
Origin's site listed $12.99 a month or $99 a year in October 2026, with a 7-day free trial and no free tier. One subscription covers you and a partner.
Origin vs Monarch vs Monio: which is cheapest?
For one person, Monio is the cheapest of the three at $7.99 a month or $80 a year. In October 2026, Origin listed $12.99 a month or $99 a year with a partner included, and Monarch Core listed $14.99 a month or $99.99 a year. A couple on Monio pays $12.99 a month with a $5 partner seat, or $140 a year on the yearly plan.
Does Origin work with Splitwise?
Origin's help pages describe splitting a transaction by hand or with rules, but don't mention Splitwise. Monio connects to Splitwise and links each bill to the card charge it belongs to.
Can I move my Origin data to Monio?
Origin lets you export transactions as a CSV from the Transactions page. Monio's importer doesn't have an Origin profile, but it can read a CSV from another app and asks which column is which when it needs to. Bank connections are made again in Monio through Plaid.
