How Simplifi and Monio count spending

Simplifi's help center says credit card payments and transfers are left out of the Spending Plan by default, so paying your card doesn't look like spending. Monio does the same thing in its own way: it pairs the checking debit with the card's payment credit and leaves both out of spending and income.

Refunds and card credits are where the two differ more. Monio matches a refund to the purchase it came from and takes it off in that purchase's category and month, so a $100 order with a $40 return counts as $60. Monio also knows the statement credits on your cards, shows what's used and what's left this period, and takes each credit off the purchase it covers. Simplifi's help pages don't mention statement credits.

Splitwise, paybacks and shared bills

Simplifi's help pages don't describe a Splitwise or Venmo connection, or a way to track who owes you.

Monio is built around this case. Say you pay a $200 dinner and three friends each send you $50 on Venmo. Monio finds the dinner each payment was for and lowers it, so Food & Dining shows $50, your share, and your income stays at $0. Connect Splitwise and each bill is linked to the card charge it belongs to. When a friend paid the whole bill, your share still counts as your spending.

Spending Plan vs. a drafted budget

Simplifi's budget is the Spending Plan. You start from expected income, take away bills, set planned spending by category, keep an Other bucket and add savings goals. What remains is a "left this month" number. You can plan up to 12 months ahead and release planned money you didn't spend. Simplifi doesn't describe it as zero-based budgeting.

Monio drafts a first budget from your last few months of spending, with a target for each category. Fixed costs set the floor: if rent is $2,100, Housing is never set below $2,100. Change or remove any amount. Spending in a category without a budget still counts toward your total, and Monio shows how much of it there is.

Projected cash flow vs. a month-end view

Simplifi's Projected Cash Flow shows where your account balances are heading, built from your income and bills, with what-if scenarios you can try. It answers the question "will I have enough in checking on the 28th?"

Monio's month-to-date and month-end views answer a different one: where your spending is likely to land this month, opened by category. If you care most about balances on a given day, Simplifi's chart is the closer fit. If you care most about where dining or shopping will end the month, Monio's view is.

Simplifi price vs. Monio price

Listed on Quicken's site in October 2026: Simplifi is $3.99 a month billed yearly, shown against $6.99 a month. That price is a first-year offer for new members who order by November 6, 2026, and it renews at the price current at that time.

Monio is $7.99 a month or $80 a year, after a 7-day free trial that doesn't ask for a card. Every feature is in the one plan. Adding a partner is $5 a month for a household seat.

Sharing with a partner

Simplifi lets you share your data with one more person by invite. They need their own Quicken ID but not a paid plan. Sharing is full access only; its help page says limited sharing isn't available yet. The person you invite uses the web app.

In Monio, each person keeps their own login and picks which of their accounts join the household. Accounts you don't share stay private to you. Money you send each other counts as a transfer, not as spending and income. A household can have up to nine seats at $5 a month each.

Investments, apps and moving from Simplifi

Simplifi has a portfolio view with cost basis, performance analysis and live quotes, along with net worth. It runs on the web, iOS and Android, though export, import and sharing are web only. It supports US and Canadian banks and one currency at a time. Monio connects investment accounts through Plaid and adds them into net worth; it's a web app you open in the browser on a computer or phone.

To move, export from Simplifi on the web: open Transactions, pick the account (or use Filter to choose several), open the three-dot menu beside Filter and choose Export to CSV. Split transactions are left out unless you turn on "Show split transactions" under the gear icon first. Monio's importer reads that file and brings over your categories, how each store was sorted, and past transactions; ones your bank can't supply again come over as history on their own account. You reconnect banks through Plaid, review before applying and can undo for 30 days. One import holds up to 8,000 transactions.

Why Monio

What Monio does well.

  • Only your share counts

When friends pay you back, Monio lowers the purchase it was for, and Splitwise bills are linked to the card charge. No re-categorizing.

  • Card credits put to work

Monio knows the statement credits on your cards, shows what's used and left this period, and takes each credit off the purchase it covers.

  • You choose what a partner sees

Each person picks which accounts join the household. Accounts you don't share stay private.

Switching

Moving from Quicken Simplifi to Monio.

Bank connections can't move between apps, but your categories, how you sort each store and your past transactions can. Export a file from Quicken Simplifi, then upload it in Monio under Switch to Monio.

  • Use a computer. Simplifi exports from its website.
  1. Open Simplifi in your browser and go to Transactions.

  2. Choose all accounts and the widest date range.

  3. Open the filter menu and choose Export to CSV.

Look in Downloads for the .csv Simplifi saved. In Monio, choose Switch to Monio and upload it. You check everything before it's applied, and you can undo the import for 30 days.
