The short answer
Monio or Monarch Money?
Monarch Money is the broader app: budgets, goals, investments with holdings and long-range planning, on web, iPhone and Android. Monio is narrower and cheaper. It focuses on counting spending correctly when friends pay you back, when you split bills on Splitwise and when a card credit or refund comes in.
- Pick Monio if
- you split costs with friends or use Splitwise, and you want your spending to show only your share without fixing transactions by hand.
- Pick Monarch Money if
- you want one app for budgets, investments and long-range planning, with native phone apps and a partner at no extra cost.

Monarch Money alternative: what's different about Monio
Monarch describes itself as an all-in-one money app: budgeting, cash flow, net worth, goals and investments, pitched at individuals, couples and households. If you want every part of your finances in one place, that breadth is the point.
Monio does less on purpose. Its job is to show what you really spent this month and where the month is heading. Most of the work goes into deciding what each transaction means before anything is added up: a card payment, a payback from a friend, a refund or a statement credit each gets handled differently, so the totals match what you actually spent.
How each app counts card payments, refunds and paybacks
Monarch's help center says card payments and transfers between your own accounts are left out of your budget, cash flow and spending, while the card purchases themselves count. A payment usually shows up twice, once as the bank debit and once as the card credit, and both sides are categorized as Credit Card Payment. Monio does the same job by pairing the two sides and leaving both out of spending.
Refunds and paybacks are where the two apps part ways. Monarch's help pages suggest putting a refund in the same category as the purchase so the two offset each other. For money friends send back, Monarch offers transaction splits (by percent or amount, by hand or with a rule) and default tags called Split and Reimburse. Monio matches a refund to the purchase it was for and takes it off that purchase, in its category and month, without you re-filing it.
Say you pay $200 for dinner and three friends each send you $50 on Venmo. In Monio, the three paybacks are matched to the dinner, and your Food spending shows $50. Nothing about the $150 counts as income.
Splitwise and shared bills
Monarch's help pages don't describe a Splitwise connection. Monio connects to Splitwise directly. A Splitwise bill is linked to the card charge it belongs to, and only your share counts toward your spending.
That also covers the other direction. If a friend paid a $120 grocery bill and Splitwise says you owe $40, Monio counts $40 as your spending. When you send the $40 later, it settles what you owed instead of showing up as a second expense.
Budgets and forecasting
Monarch offers two budgeting styles. Flex budgeting groups costs into fixed, variable and non-monthly, so you watch one variable number. Category budgets set an amount per category, with an optional rollover of unspent money. Forecasting, which projects net worth and cash flow over years, is part of the Plus tier. Monarch's help pages don't describe a month-end spending projection.
Monio drafts a first budget from your recent spending, with fixed costs like rent as the floor: if rent is $2,100, your housing budget is never set below $2,100. Spending in a category without a budget still counts toward your total. Monio also shows month-to-date and month-end views of your spending, which you can open by category.
Monarch Money price vs. Monio price
Monarch's Core plan is $14.99 a month or $99.99 a year, listed on Monarch's site in October 2026, with a 7-day free trial; no free tier is listed. Plus is a higher tier that adds forecasting, multiple income tracking and deeper investment tools.
Monio is $7.99 a month or $80 a year, with a 7-day free trial and no credit card needed to start. Every feature is in the one plan. Over a year that's $80 against $99.99 for Monarch Core.
Sharing with a partner
Monarch includes a partner at no extra cost under one subscription. Each person gets their own login with the same access level, and Shared Views filter by personal, partner or joint accounts. Its help center says the person you invite needs to be new to Monarch, without an account of their own.
In Monio, a partner joins your household for $5 a month and keeps their own login and accounts. Each person chooses which accounts to share. Unshared accounts stay private, and money moved between you isn't counted as spending and income in the household view. For two people, Monio costs $12.99 a month against Monarch's $14.99.
Platforms, banks and investments
Monarch runs on the web, iPhone, iPad and Android, for accounts in the US and Canada. It connects banks through three providers (Plaid, Mastercard Data Connect and MX) and lets you switch provider per account. Its investment pages cover holdings, allocation and performance.
Monio runs in any web browser, on a computer or a phone, and connects banks, cards and brokerages through Plaid. It shows investment balances in your net worth. It does not give investment advice.

Why Monio
What Monio does well.
Shared costs handled
Splitwise bills are linked to the card charge, and when a friend pays you back Monio finds the purchase it was for. Only your share counts, with no re-categorizing.
Card credits put to work
Monio knows the statement credits on your cards, shows what's used and what's left this period, and takes each credit off the purchase it covers.
Where the month is heading
See where your spending is likely to land before the month is over, by category.
