Privacy notice
Monio uses the least data it needs to provide personal finance tools. This notice explains what it keeps, why, and what you can do.
Data Monio receives
- Account and transaction facts you add or choose to link through Plaid.
- Your sign-in email, profile choices, budgets, plans, household links, and corrections.
- Receipt, calendar, or shared-expense facts only after you link that service.
- Billing state from Stripe. Monio does not receive full card numbers.
- Basic service logs such as request IDs, time, result codes, and security events.
- Page-visit statistics, tied to a random ID stored in your browser.
How Monio uses data
Monio uses this data to show your finances, sync linked services, detect repeat items, run features you ask for, prevent abuse, and meet legal duties. Monio does not sell personal data.
AI features
Monio AI is on by default and uses Anthropic's Claude models. Monio tells you before it is first used, and closing that notice keeps it on. You can turn it off any time in Settings, under Privacy and AI; then no new AI requests are made, including in the background within a minute or so. Results saved before you turned it off, such as a short reason for a match, stay in your account, and deleting your account removes them.
When it is on, Monio sends finance totals and the individual transaction fields a task needs: dates, amounts, currencies, merchants, categories, card and account names, and bank descriptions with numbers and email addresses removed. A description can still include a name, such as who a payment went to, or a payment-app note. For a Splitwise bill it sends the description, Splitwise category, date, total, your share and what you're owed back; when sorting Splitwise bills it also sends the group name and up to eight other bills from that group. Notes and bills can be written by other people, such as a friend who added a Splitwise bill.
Monio never adds your email address or sign-in details to AI requests, and removes numbers and email addresses from bank and payment text. It also never adds bank connection keys, account IDs, notes you write in Monio, or email bodies, and your AI requests never include the accounts and transactions of other people in your household. Accounts marked "Hidden from totals" on the Accounts page are never sent to the AI; they count only inside totals (spending, income, budgets and loan minimum payments), as on your dashboard. What you type into a Monet question or a plan is sent as you wrote it. AI can be wrong: Monio applies only results it is confident about, asks you about the rest, and you can change any of them. Details are on How Monio uses AI.
Usage analytics
Monio uses PostHog to count which pages people visit and to record masked session replays, so we can see what's useful and fix what's confusing. A replay shows the page layout, mouse movement, clicks and scrolling, and the wording of menus, buttons and page titles. Everything you type, every image, every number, and any other text inside Monio is hidden before it leaves your browser, so a replay never contains balances, transactions, account or bank names, or your name. Each visit also notes the page address (without anything after a ? or #), the page you came from, your browser, device and screen size, and a random ID.
When you're signed in, these visits are linked to your Monio user ID, and PostHog also receives your email address and display name along with how you use the app, so the team can see who had a problem and help. Monio also tells PostHog when you reach a few milestones: signing up, finishing setup, connecting a bank or Splitwise, a first sync, starting checkout, subscribing or cancelling, joining a household, and importing from another app. Each milestone says only what kind it was (for example "bank" or "monthly plan"), never an amount, account, bank name, email or name. Deleting your account also deletes your PostHog record, its events and replays.
Sharing and processors
Monio uses Cloudflare for hosting, Supabase for auth and data, Plaid for bank links, Stripe for billing, Resend for service email, PostHog for usage statistics and masked session replays, Anthropic for AI features (which you can turn off), and linked services you choose. Each gets only the data needed for its job. A household member sees only records covered by the household and account sharing rules.
Retention and control
You can disconnect a provider, export your data, or ask Monio to delete your account. Some short records may remain when needed for fraud, tax, payment, or legal duties. Backup copies age out under the host's backup schedule.
