The short answer
Monio or Mint?
Mint shut down in March 2024, and Intuit pointed its users to Credit Karma. If you are still looking for a Mint replacement that tracks spending and budgets from your bank and card accounts, Monio does that, and it can bring in the transactions.csv you saved from Mint so your old history isn't lost.
- Pick Monio if
- you want Mint's automatic tracking back, with card payments, refunds and money friends pay you back counted correctly, and your old Mint history in the same place.
- Pick Mint if
- you were happy with Credit Karma's spending and cash flow tools after the move and don't need a full budget.

What happened to Mint
Mint was Intuit's budgeting app. Intuit shut it down in March 2024 and folded it into Credit Karma. Credit Karma's own announcement said Mint was going away and invited Mint users to Credit Karma, describing its spending tracking and cash flow monitoring.
Credit Karma's page describes spending tracking and cash flow monitoring; it doesn't describe budgets like Mint's. If you want an app with budgets and still haven't settled on one, the rest of this page covers what to look for and how to move your old data.
What to look for in a Mint replacement
Start with how the app counts spending, because that's where many budget apps go wrong. Paying off a credit card is not spending: the purchases on the card already were. A $1,500 card payment counted as spending makes your month look $1,500 worse than it was. Moving money from checking to savings is not income either. Check what an app's help pages say about card payments and transfers before you trust its totals.
Next, look at what happens when money comes back. A $90 refund should lower the purchase it was for, in that purchase's month, not show up as $90 of income. The same goes for paybacks: say you paid a $200 dinner, your share was $50, and three friends sent you $150. The honest number is $50 of dining, not $200 of spending and $150 of income. Some apps make you fix this by hand each time.
Then think about how you'll pay for it. Free apps still need a way to make money, and many Mint replacements charge a subscription instead. The price, the trial length and what a partner costs differ a lot from one app to the next.
How Monio counts spending
Monio sorts every transaction before adding anything up: spending, income, a transfer between your own accounts, a card payment or a refund. Both sides of a card payment or a transfer are paired and left out of spending. Refunds are matched to the purchase and taken off it, in its category and its month.
Money friends pay you back lowers the purchase it was for. If you use Splitwise, Monio connects to it and links each bill to the card charge, so only your share counts. Monio also tracks the statement credits on your cards and takes each one off the purchase it covers. When you fix a category, Monio keeps your choice on future syncs.
Budgets and the month ahead
Mint users were used to a budget per category. Monio sets one up for you from up to three months of your own spending, with fixed costs like rent as the floor: if rent is $2,100, your housing budget is never set below $2,100. Spending in a category without a budget still counts toward your total.
Monio shows month-to-date and month-end views, opened by category, so you can see where the month is likely to land before it's over.
How to import your Mint transactions.csv into Monio
Mint's export was usually a file named transactions.csv. If you downloaded it before Mint closed, you can bring it into Monio. First connect your banks and cards through Plaid; Monio asks each bank for up to 24 months of transactions, depending on the bank. Then open the importer, choose Mint and upload the file.
Monio brings over your categories, how each store was sorted (so it can keep sorting the same merchant the same way), and your past transactions. Transactions your bank can't supply, such as the years before your connected history begins, come over as history on their own account.
You review everything before it's applied, and you can undo an import for 30 days. One import holds up to 8,000 transactions. Bank connections don't travel in a file, which is why you make them again through Plaid.
Price, platforms and sharing with a partner
Monio Pro is $7.99 a month or $80 a year after a 7-day free trial. It is paid for by its subscription and never sells personal data. Monio runs in any web browser, on a desktop, laptop or phone.
If you share money with a partner, a household seat is $5 a month. Each person keeps their own login and chooses which accounts to share, and money moved between you isn't counted as spending and income.

Why Monio
What Monio does well.
Paid for by you, not your data
Monio is paid for by its subscription. It never sells your data.
History comes with you
When you connect an account, Monio asks for up to 24 months of transactions, depending on your bank.
A budget drafted for you
Monio builds a first budget from your real spending and never sets a limit below fixed costs like rent.
Switching
Moving from Mint to Monio.
Bank connections can't move between apps, but your categories, how you sort each store and your past transactions can. Export a file from Mint, then upload it in Monio under Switch to Monio.
- Mint closed in March 2024. This works with a Mint export you saved before then.
Find the transactions.csv you downloaded from Mint.
Mint's file was usually named transactions.csv. In Monio, choose Switch to Monio and upload it. You check everything before it's applied, and you can undo the import for 30 days.
Questions
Common questions.
Is there a Mint alternative that works in Canada?
Monio works in the US and Canada. Choose Canada when you set up Monio and it connects Canadian banks and cards through Plaid and shows your money in Canadian dollars. Monio's prices are in US dollars.
When did Mint shut down?
Intuit shut Mint down in March 2024 and pointed its users to Credit Karma.
What is the best Mint replacement app?
It depends on what you used Mint for. If you want automatic tracking with budgets, look for an app that leaves card payments and transfers out of spending and takes refunds off the purchase. Monio does both, and also counts only your share of bills split with friends.
Can I still import my old Mint data?
Yes, if you saved the transactions.csv from Mint before it closed. Monio's importer reads it, brings over your categories and past transactions, and lets you review before applying. You can undo the import for 30 days.
Is there a free Mint alternative?
Some apps have free versions, often paid for by ads or offers. Monio is not free: it is $7.99 a month or $80 a year after a 7-day free trial, and it never sells personal data.
Did Mint move my data to Credit Karma?
Credit Karma's announcement invited Mint users to move over. For exactly what came across, check Credit Karma's own help pages. If you also have a Mint export, you can bring it into Monio.
