Privacy and security

Your money stays under your control.

Monio needs some financial records to show you a useful picture. This page explains what Monio can see, what it cannot do, and the choices you keep.

What Monio can do

  • Read your transactions and balancesYes
  • Move money or make paymentsNever
  • See or store your bank passwordNever
  • Sell your dataNever
  • Export or delete everything, any timeYes

Access and control

Four promises.

  • Your login stays with your bank

Your bank sign-in goes to Plaid, not Monio. Monio receives the balances and transactions of the accounts you choose to link, and it cannot move money from them.

  • Encrypted and access-checked

Traffic uses HTTPS, provider tokens are encrypted before they are stored, and every financial record is checked against the person who owns it.

  • AI you can turn off

Monio AI is on by default. It helps sort transactions, check repayment matches, set up your first budget and answer your questions. Monio tells you once before it is used, and you can turn it off any time in Settings. It receives totals and the transactions a task needs (at most 100 for a question): dates, amounts, currencies, merchants, account names, and bank descriptions with numbers and email addresses removed, including the note on a Venmo, PayPal or Cash App payment and Splitwise bill and group names. Monio never adds your email address, notes you add in Monio, email bodies or bank sign-in details, and what you type into a question is sent as you wrote it. The AI is Anthropic's Claude.

  • Household sharing you control

Each household member has a separate sign-in and chooses which of their accounts go into the shared view. Accounts you don't share stay private.

Bank connections

Who is Plaid?

Plaid is a San Francisco company that connects apps to bank accounts. Venmo and SoFi use it too.

  • Connects apps to more than 12,000 banks and financial companies.
  • 1 in 2 US adults has linked an account through Plaid.
  • Your bank password goes to Plaid or your bank, never to Monio.
  • Plaid encrypts your data while it's stored and while it's sent.
  • You can see or cut off any app's access at my.plaid.com.

Read-only access. You choose which accounts to connect. Monio reads their transactions only to build your numbers, and it can't move money.

How Monio uses financial records

Monio uses your records to show accounts and spending, find repeat costs, set up and track your budgets, and keep the service working. Monio never sells personal data.

Your choices

You decide which services to connect, whether to keep Monio AI on, and which accounts to share with a household. You can disconnect a linked service when you no longer want Monio to receive new records from it. What the AI sees, and how to turn it off, is on How Monio uses AI.

Taking your data with you

You can export your records or request account deletion from Settings. Monio may keep short records when the law, payment handling or fraud prevention requires it. The full details are in the Privacy notice.

Questions and reports

No online service can promise zero risk. If you have a privacy question or find a security problem, contact Monio without sending account numbers, bank statements, passwords, one-time codes or access tokens.
