The short answer

Monio or Rocket Money?

Pick Rocket Money if your main goal is finding subscriptions and having someone cancel them or negotiate bills for you. Pick Monio if you want a spending total you can trust: card payments left out, and money friends pay back taken off the purchase it was for. They answer different questions, and some people would be happy with either.

Pick Monio if
you split costs with friends or a partner and want only your share of each bill to count as spending.
Pick Rocket Money if
you mostly want help cancelling subscriptions and lowering bills, and a free plan matters to you.

Rocket Money’s column was checked against its own help pages in October 2026: Credit card payments & transfers, Reimbursements & shared bills, Tracking refunds, Goals, Account sharing, Help center. Apps change, so check their website for current details.

How Rocket Money and Monio count spending

Both apps try to keep money you move between your own accounts out of your spending. Rocket Money's help center says transfers between your accounts get an Internal Transfers category, and payments to a linked credit card get a Credit Card Payment category so the purchases aren't counted twice. The same page says some will be missed and you fix those by hand.

Monio pairs the two sides of each move, the checking debit and the card's payment credit, and leaves both out of spending and income. Refunds are matched to the purchase they came from and taken off it, in the purchase's category and month. Return a $40 sweater from a $100 order and Shopping shows $60, with no $40 of income.

Paybacks, shared bills and Splitwise

Rocket Money's help page on shared bills says to change the category of a friend's payment to the bill's category, for example Bills & Utilities, so it offsets what you paid. Work reimbursements go in a Reimbursements category. The page doesn't mention a Splitwise or Venmo connection.

Monio does this matching for you. Say you pay a $200 dinner and three friends send you $150 on Venmo over the next week. Monio finds the dinner each payment was for and lowers it, so Food & Dining shows $50 and your income stays at $0. You don't re-categorize anything.

Monio also connects to Splitwise. A Splitwise bill is linked to the card charge it belongs to, and when a friend paid the whole bill, your share still counts as your spending.

Subscriptions, cancelling and bill negotiation

This is where Rocket Money is strongest. It finds subscriptions in your transactions, and with Premium its team cancels subscriptions for you. It also offers to negotiate some bills on your behalf.

Monio finds recurring charges too, from weekly to yearly, lists what each costs a month and points out when a price goes up. It doesn't cancel or negotiate anything: you see the list and contact the company yourself. In a household, Monio also points out when two of you pay for the same service.

Budgets and the month ahead

Rocket Money's budgets are spending limits by category, set from the history it has tracked. Premium allows unlimited categories, and the free plan includes a timeline of upcoming bills.

Monio drafts a first budget from your last few months, never below fixed costs: if rent is $2,100, Housing is never set under $2,100. Spending in a category without a budget still counts toward your total. Monio shows month-to-date and month-end views, opened by category, so you can see where the month is likely to land before it's over.

Rocket Money price vs. Monio price

Listed on Rocket Money's site in October 2026: the free plan is $0, Premium is "pay what you think is fair" between $7 and $14 a month, and Premium+ is $15 a month. The free plan lets you see your subscriptions, a bill timeline and basic budgets. Web access, manual transactions, net worth and CSV export are Premium.

Monio has one plan with every feature: $7.99 a month or $80 a year, after a 7-day free trial that doesn't ask for a card. A partner or family member is $5 a month as a household seat. Each person picks which accounts to share, and accounts they don't share stay private. Rocket Money's partner rules are on its account sharing help page.

Phone apps, web and where each works

Rocket Money has iOS and Android apps on every plan, and the website is part of Premium. Its help center says it's available only to people in the US with US banks.

Monio is a web app you open in the browser on a computer or phone. Banks and cards connect through Plaid, which gives Monio read access to the accounts you choose; Monio can't move money.

Moving from Rocket Money to Monio

Rocket Money exports transactions as a CSV file, a Premium feature. In the app, open the Transactions tab, tap the menu icon at the top right, choose CSV Download, set your filters and tap Export. On the web, go to Transactions, then Export. Rocket Money emails you a Download File link, which opens on a computer.

Monio's importer reads that file. It brings over your categories, how each store was sorted, and past transactions; ones your bank can't supply again come over as history on their own account. You reconnect banks through Plaid, review everything before applying, and can undo the import for 30 days. One import holds up to 8,000 transactions.

Why Monio

What Monio does well.

  • Spending you can trust

Card payments and transfers between your own accounts are left out, so each purchase is counted once.

  • Your share, not the whole bill

When friends pay you back, Monio lowers the original expense instead of calling it income.

  • Subscriptions too

Recurring charges are found for you, with what each one costs a month and any price increase pointed out.

Switching

Moving from Rocket Money to Monio.

Bank connections can't move between apps, but your categories, how you sort each store and your past transactions can. Export a file from Rocket Money, then upload it in Monio under Switch to Monio.

  • Exporting needs Rocket Money Premium.
  • Rocket Money emails you a download link that only opens on a computer.
  1. Open Rocket Money in your browser and go to Transactions.

  2. Click Export and choose all dates.

  3. Open the email from Rocket Money and download the CSV.

Look in Downloads for the .csv from Rocket Money's email. In Monio, choose Switch to Monio and upload it. You check everything before it's applied, and you can undo the import for 30 days.

Questions

Rocket Money itself has a free plan. Monio isn't free: it's $7.99 a month or $80 a year after a 7-day free trial, with every feature included.

Can I move my data from Rocket Money to Monio?

Yes. Export your transactions from Rocket Money as a CSV (a Premium feature) and import the file into Monio. You review the import before applying it and can undo it for 30 days.

Does Monio cancel subscriptions like Rocket Money?

No. Monio finds recurring charges, shows what each costs a month and points out price increases. To cancel, you contact the company yourself.

Does Rocket Money count credit card payments as spending?

Rocket Money's help center says payments to a linked card get a Credit Card Payment category so purchases aren't counted twice, and you fix any it misses by hand. Monio pairs both sides of each payment and leaves them out of spending and income.

Is Rocket Money good for splitting costs with friends?

Rocket Money's help center says to re-categorize a friend's payment into the shared bill's category, by hand. Monio matches paybacks to the purchase and connects to Splitwise, so only your share counts.
