Zero-based budgeting vs. a budget drafted for you

EveryDollar is built on zero-based budgeting: you give every dollar of your income a job before the month starts, until what's left to plan is zero. It uses funds (sinking funds) to set money aside for bills that don't come every month. Premium adds paycheck planning.

Monio works the other way round. It looks at your last few months and drafts a first budget, with a target for each category. Fixed costs set the floor: if rent is $2,100, Housing is never set below $2,100. Change or remove any amount, or ask Monio AI to rebuild the budget; nothing from a rebuild is saved until you confirm. Monio isn't a zero-based app, so if planning every dollar ahead is what keeps you on track, EveryDollar fits that habit better.

How each app counts spending

On EveryDollar's free plan you enter transactions yourself; Premium connects your bank so they come in for you. For cards, EveryDollar's help center says it doesn't encourage using them, and when the bill is paid it suggests deleting both sides of the payment by hand. A refund or reimbursement in the same month goes back to the line where you recorded the purchase; one that arrives in a later month is recorded as income.

Monio works out what each transaction means before adding anything up. The checking debit and the card's payment credit are paired and left out of spending and income, so paying off your card never counts twice. Refunds are matched to the purchase they came from: a $100 order with a $40 return counts as $60 in Shopping, in the month you bought it, with no $40 of income.

Paybacks, Splitwise and shared costs

Say you pay a $200 dinner and three friends each send you $50 on Venmo. In Monio, each payment is matched to the dinner and lowers it, so Food & Dining shows $50, your share, and your income stays at $0. You don't move anything between categories.

Monio also connects to Splitwise. Each Splitwise bill is linked to the card charge it belongs to, and when a friend paid the whole bill, your share still counts as your spending. If you share a lot of costs with roommates or friends, this is the main reason to pick Monio over a budget you keep by hand.

Card credits and the month ahead

EveryDollar's help pages don't mention card statement credits. Monio knows the credits on your cards, shows what's used and what's left this period, and takes each credit off the purchase it covers.

For the month itself, Monio shows month-to-date and month-end views, opened by category, so you can see where spending is likely to land before the month is over. EveryDollar Premium includes a Financial Roadmap.

EveryDollar free vs. Premium, and Monio's price

Listed on Ramsey Solutions' site in October 2026: EveryDollar's free plan includes a monthly budget, unlimited categories, manual entry, sinking funds, bill due dates and support from a live person. Premium is $17.99 a month or $79.99 a year, with a 14-day free trial for new users. Premium adds bank connection, paycheck planning, reports, CSV export and the Financial Roadmap.

Monio has one plan with every feature: $7.99 a month or $80 a year, after a 7-day free trial that doesn't ask for a card. Bank connection is included. Paid yearly, the two cost about the same; paid monthly, Monio is $10 a month less than EveryDollar Premium.

Sharing a budget with a spouse or partner

EveryDollar lets a spouse join the same budget with their own login, so you both work from one plan.

Monio keeps two people's money side by side instead. Each person keeps their own login and picks which accounts join the household; accounts you don't share stay private. Money you send each other counts as a transfer, not as spending and income. A household seat is $5 a month, on top of the owner's plan.

Apps and moving from EveryDollar

EveryDollar works on a computer, phone or tablet. Monio is a web app you open in the browser on a computer or phone. Banks connect through Plaid, which gives Monio read access to the accounts you choose; Monio can't move money.

Monio doesn't have an import made for EveryDollar. To switch, connect your banks and cards to Monio through Plaid and it pulls in the transactions your bank makes available, then drafts a budget from them. If you're on Premium, you can download a CSV of your tracked transactions from EveryDollar. Monio's import for another app takes any CSV with a date, an amount and a description, and asks which column is which if it needs to.

Why Monio

What Monio does well.

  • Less upkeep

Transactions come in from your bank and Monio sorts them. Check in when you like instead of entering each one.

  • Only your share counts

When friends pay you back, Monio lowers the purchase it was for, and Splitwise bills are linked to the card charge.

  • Card credits put to work

Monio knows the statement credits on your cards and takes each one off the purchase it covers.

Questions

Common questions.

Is there a free alternative to EveryDollar?

EveryDollar itself has a free plan, with manual entry. Monio isn't free: it's $7.99 a month or $80 a year after a 7-day free trial, with bank connection included.

Is EveryDollar Premium worth it?

Premium mainly adds bank connection, paycheck planning, reports, CSV export and the Financial Roadmap, for $17.99 a month or $79.99 a year as listed in October 2026. Whether that's worth it depends on how much you want transactions to come in on their own.

Can I move my data from EveryDollar to Monio?

Monio doesn't have an import made for EveryDollar. Connect your banks to Monio through Plaid, and Monio drafts a budget from the transactions your bank provides. A CSV exported from EveryDollar Premium can go through Monio's import for another app, which takes any CSV with a date, an amount and a description.

Is Monio a zero-based budgeting app?

No. Monio drafts a budget from your recent spending, never below fixed costs like rent, and you change any amount you like. If you want to give every dollar a job first, EveryDollar is built for that.

Can my partner and I share an EveryDollar budget?

Yes, a spouse can join the same EveryDollar budget with their own login. In Monio, a household seat is $5 a month and each person chooses which accounts to share.

Does EveryDollar connect to my bank?

Yes, on Premium. On the free plan you enter transactions by hand. Monio connects banks and cards through Plaid on its one plan.
