AI Budget Recommendations
What you get.
Built on your numbers
Each amount starts from what you spent in that category over your recent months, not a template made for someone else.
Fixed costs protected
No suggestion goes below fixed costs like rent, loans or insurance, whatever the AI proposes.
You decide
See each amount first. Add them all, or change an amount before you add it. Budgets you already have stay as they are.
How it works
Four simple steps.
- 01
Connect your accounts
Monio needs about a month of spending to suggest a budget. More history, up to six months, gives steadier amounts.
- 02
Open suggested budgets
On the Budgets page, see a suggested amount for each category, worked out from your recent months.
- 03
Redraft with Monio AI
Ask Monio AI to redraft the amounts. It checks them against your income and fixed costs and explains its changes in a short note.
- 04
Add what you want
Add every amount at once, or change one first. Nothing is saved until you add it.
What the suggestions start from
Monio looks at what you spent in each category in up to six months before this one. Everyday needs like groceries, health and transport keep their usual amount. Extras like dining out, shopping, entertainment and travel get a modest trim.
Fixed costs set the floor. If your rent is $2,100, Housing is never suggested below $2,100. Student loan and mortgage minimums from your lender's statements count toward the floor too.
What Monio AI adds
When you choose Redraft amounts, Monio sends Monio AI a summary: your spending per category, your fixed costs, an income estimate and your recent transactions, with numbers and email addresses removed from bank text. The AI proposes amounts and a short explanation of why.
Monio then checks every amount before you see it. Anything below a fixed cost is raised back to it, and an answer about a category Monio didn't send is ignored. If the amounts add up to more than your usual monthly income, Monio says so, and fixed costs are not cut to make them fit.
Your totals are always worked out by Monio, never by the AI. The AI page on this site lists exactly what it sees for each task.
Monio AI is on by default
Monio AI is on when you start, and Monio tells you once before it is used. Turn it off any time in Settings under Privacy and AI. After you connect your first bank, Monio drafts a first budget on its own, once, with Monio AI's help when it is on.
With AI off, Monio still suggests a budget from your spending, and you can set every amount yourself. Your spending chart, categories and budgets all work without it.
